INTRODUCTION

Dr. Ong had investigated hundreds of stories about haunting and ghosts in Malaysia, including visiting the sites where the strange stories occurred. Dr Ong had found that almost all cases can be attributed to inauspicious Feng Shui features of the terrain. That is, the socalled haunting is an ill-understood physical phenomenon. Howver, there are some rare less than 5% of the cases where Dr Ong believes that there may be interesting grounds for a supernatural element. Here, the story of such a case is discussed.

All over the world, people get lost in the natural wilderness. In many cases, strange circumstances were encountered, making people speculated that supernatural or UFO events were involved. In Malaysia, among the common areas where haunting would be reported, one is Fraser's Hill, a cool scenic tourist highland spot.

Story of the Lost Boys

The story began with a typical weekend, when Fraser Hill would be flocked with tourists who came to relax in the beautiful cool climate. Some tourists came from as far as Singapore.

Among these tourists was a group of Singaporeans. The boys had just finished trekking one of the shorter trials and wanted to try another trial. So, some time before lunch, the father took them to Muar Cottage, which was the station of the end of Bishop Trial and also the start of the closed Maxwell Trial. Maxwell Trial was closed as there was a landslide and the landslide area was not yet repaired.

There were two brothers and one cousin among the three boys. They were going to trek Bishop Trial and the father said he would be waiting for them at the other end of Bishop Trial an hour later. They would go for lunch after that. The boys were confident as one of them was a Scout.

But, the father waited for hours in vain for them. Realising the boys were lost, he reported the that the boys were missing. Then began the search for the boys who were missing for some 5 days.

The police and army personnel cooperated in the search. Finally, they had to call in the renown Senoi scouts who had successfully trek other olost people before. It was these Senoi scouts who found the boys, who had somehow gone down the closed Maxwell Trial. From Muar Cottage, a track goes down a slope towards a T-junction. The right trial was the closed Maxwell Trial and the left was Bishop Trial which the boys were supposed to take. What made them went by the forbidden Maxwell Trial?

Mysteries in the Lost Boys Case

The few Fraser Hill people who were authorised to follow the Senoi scouts witnessed something fantastic. The native scouts had prayed to the guardians of the jungle for help to locate the lost boys. Not knowing where the boys had gone, one of the scouts had placed a burning cigarette into the soil and waited. To the amazement of the onlookers, the cigarette actually bended and its smokes curled towards the direction of the bend. The scouts knew in which direction the boys were lost. For they went down that direction to eventually find the boys.

Everybody was relieved and happy that the boys were found. The boys were exhausted but not the worse for their experience.

The strange tales had only began.

The boys were reported to have arrived at the junction when something strange occurred. One daily reported that they had suddenly heard strange music and to their amazement they saw this strange but beautiful world before them. There were colourful objects. So, for reasons they could not explain, they went into this strange world. After walking form some distance the world disappeared and the boys realised they were lost.

The Senoi scouts said that there was nothing beautiful about the junction as it was muddy. What did the boys see? The locals claimed that the boys were charmed by the jungle spirits.

The Senoi scouts also wondered how the boys could go the way they did. For the scouts had to detour around a huge bamboo groove down the slope to continue their search. The locals wondered how did the boys negotiate the groove?

The Locals Had Their Explanations

Practically all the locals in Fraser Hill believed that the jungle spirits played a trick on the boys and made them got lost. It was the same explanation given when in the past others got lost.

One claimed to have heard the eldest boy boasting about being able to trek Bishop Trial as he was an experienced Boy Scout. Thus, the Dato guardian spirit got angry and caused them to be lost. Bishop Trial was one of the steeper trials but not difficult to trek. There were signs along the way and ropes along the steeper sections. It is not really that difficult to trek this trial.

More Mysteries about the Lost Boys

Upon investigating the case, it is easy to brush it off as a case of careless trekking. If you are tired in the jungle it is easy to forget what you think you can remember of the route you take. This is especially when that part of the jungle is new to you. Perhaps, the boys hallucinated, an angle which is difficult to uphold in view of that all the three boys suffered the same hallucination.

Hence, almost every one believed in one way or other that the "orang bunian" played a trick on the boys.

During the few days the search was going on for the boys, there were some interesting pertinent news about Fraser Hill. It attracts other Singaporeans who were curious to see the place their countrymen had got lost.

However, one of the native scouts came across footprints of a large tiger along Bishop Trial. The army helicopter actually sighted a large tiger on the otehr side of Fraser Hill, walking along a road near the Gap end of Fraser Hill. That is, there were tigers roaming Fraser Hill at the time the boys went lost.

Suddenly, a new angle to the story emerged. If the boys had gone along Bishop Trial they could have met the tiger. Then, a sad story could have occurred.

The Dato guardian angel of Fraser Hill must have seen the danger. So, the mystic world intervened as it rarely did. A mystical world opened to lure the boys away from the danger. It is better for the boys to get lost than to end up as victims of the tiger. Perhaps, the spirits opened a way through the thic k bamboo groove for the boys to go through and sealed it again when the tiger arrived.

Some of the locals were astonished that they never thought of that the jungle spirits actually were helping the boys!

These spirits have been around longer than humans. The native Orang Asli have great respect for the unseen mystical world of these spirits.

Now and then the people of Fraser Hill had reported seeing an old man dressed in white. This is the White Dato of Fraser Hill. Not withstanding the humans, he has been the guardian angel of the place. It appears that this White Dato has a benevolent attitude to the people of Fraser Hill.

While it is easy to attribute strange events to the supernatural, most have natural physical causes. However, this lost boys case is one of the rare cases which appear not to fully come under a physical Feng Shui explanation.
