2012 NEW YEAR PREDICTIONS:
OF DRAGON, RABBIT AND SNAKE

Prof. Dr. Ong Hean-Tatt. 2 January 2012

Most Chinese astrologers do not really know, but make chancy predictions.

Introduction

At the turn of the year, many will try their hands at predicting the aspects for the incoming new year. As one newspaper editor told me, these amusing predictions often proved wrong. I have written before in a previous article that a major reason for the wrong predictions was the failure to realise that there is a need to adjust the Chinese horoscopes by one year.

This is because due to the precession of the equinoxes the axis of the Earth wobbles past one Zodiac sign every 2,000 years. Previously, the Hsia, Shang, Chou and Han dynasties did shift the sign of the year one sign forward every 2,000 years. But since the end of the Han dynasty, this shift has not been done. That is, 2011 was not the Year of Rabbit but actually Dragon, while this coming year 2102 is not the Year of Dragon but Snake!

In a previous article , we have shown that while the Western and Hindu 12 Zodiac signs tally with each other, they do not tally with those of the Chinese Zodiac. It was only when the Chinese Zodiac signs are shifted one sign that the Chinese Zodiac will show amazing tally with those of the Western and Hindu systems The Chinese Zodiac has to shift one sign. Almost all current Chinese astrologers are getting their dates wrong!

Is 2011 really Year of Rabbit?

Grrr... How dare the Rabbit steal my year 2011!
2011 Year of Rabbit?

Was 2011 the Year of Rabbit?

Look at these predictions made at the beginning of 2011 about the Year of the Rabbit:

  • According to Chinese tradition, the Rabbit brings a year in which you can catch your breath and calm your nerves.

The year of the Metal Rabbit promises to bring some much-needed peace and tranquillity. If you are like most people, you probably feel like you were on a roller coaster in 2010, the year of the Tiger. That will generally not be the case in 2011, as the Rabbit is everything the Tiger is not. "Let there be peace -- and let it begin with me" is the Rabbit motto. The Tiger makes waves, but the Rabbit mends fences. Diplomacy reigns. If you want to improve your chances of success, negotiate and cooperate rather than force your ideas on others. It's also a time to kiss and make up. Forgive and forget. Let's all get along. Make love not war. If last year the emphasis was on excitement, it's now is on harmony.

The coming 2011 year of the metal Rabbit is around the corner. It is not the size of this animal that makes sense for the whole year, but its inner nature. It looks like we've got quite sophisticated period with gracious manners and sensitivity.

Well, does 2011 fit into the prediction?

Instead of a peaceful graceful year, 2011 was certainly a violent turbulent year! Quite opposite to the traditional horoscope for a year of Rabbit. One should ask the fortune teller why is it that Year 2011, supposedly a quite peaceful Rabbit Year, was so troubled. Maybe the Rabbit got rabies.

So, in Truth, these so-called astrologers really did not know, but only pretended to predict. Alas, people forget and allow these same astrologers to continue their faulty predictions year after year.

  • I will always remember how one international geomancy site tried to argue that the real features of the Rabbit compose of violence and disturbances! I suppose he was basing his revisions of the Chinese rabbit on the Western concept of the silly hare who lost the race against a tortoise!

Hey! 2012 is not Year of Dragon but Year of Snake!

Horoscope for the Year of Snake

The effects of the precession of the equinoxes mean that 2012 is not a Year of Dragon but that of Snake. Let us see what are the traditional predictions for a year of Snake, which should apply for year 2012.

  • A year for reflection, planning and searching answers... Looking back into history, we find that the year of the Snake has never been tranquil. Perhaps this is because it is the strongest negative force in the cycle and it follows the Dragon year... Many disasters which had their beginning in the year of Dragon tend to culminate in the year of Snake. These two signs are very closely related and the calamities of the Snake years often resulted from excesses committed during the Dragon reign. (Lau, 1979. The Handbook of Chinese Horoscopes).

So, bad news for those already in trouble! Their troubles of 2011 will continue into the Year of the Snake! A Year of Snake is supposed to continue the problems of the Year of Dragon. Not really new problems. That is, the Year of Snake will also be a troubled year, much of which are continuations of the problems triggered off in the previous year.

There are those who predicted that 2012 will be a troubled year as they are using the features of a Year of Dragon. They got the sign wrong. But, they are not wrong in that 2012 will be a troubled year, as both the Dragon and Snake years are supposed to be troubled times. The natural disasters and human disturbances will continue.

  • Those who are using the Dragon to describe 2012 should be asked about why 2011 a so-called year of Rabbit proved so troubled instead of the peaceful thing it was supposed to be.

Actually, it does not take much to predict 2012. The problems emerging during 2011 could not just disappear overnight. Hence, even a non-astrologer would have guessed that the problems of 2011 will carry into 2012.

There is an integrated high Feng Shui - astrology which can lead to kingship and top leadership! The current Feng Shui and astrology are full of errors and trivial things.

People have an inherent curiosity about the unknown and unusual. Horoscopes are fun readings and, actually, most do not take them seriously. In meetings and parties they are good for a laugh, but that is about it and they often forgot how wrong the predictions really were.

For those few who are serious about their horoscopes, they know that the customary annual predictions are insufficient and even irrelevant. Whether a year is good or bad, it is up to the individual to plan and control how the year can fare for him. If the annual reading just tickles him, then the annual reading is irrelevant to him for planning the year. That individual then will not use astrology to plan his year.

If that individual wants to use astrology to help plan his year, then a proper horoscope must be cast through one of the complete divination arts, like Zi Wei Dou Shu or Ba Zi Eight Characters divination. There is no escape from such a complete divination.

  • The person's fundamental astrological qualities have to be known. If that person is destined to be a farmer, then how Destiny affects the sea may not be of relevant to him. How Destiny affects the weather may be of greater relevance. Destiny affects a wide range of things, but only a portion will be relevant to one or the other person.

Some periods in the year may be good for his qualities. Then, the person may seek enhancers to boost his qualities.

Other periods in the year may not be so good. If those periods are critical, then remedies must be applied to counter the potential adverse conditions.

One may want to use a special sanshi divination meant for the year, like a Tai Yi Shen Shi forecast, which can tell whether a person should be active and aggressive or lie low and be patient in the year. The Tai Yi Shen Shi divination can also tell which activities and qualities are affected.

If the above are realised, then astrology can be one factor in a life planning. That is what astrology should be, a life planning tool.

So, be practical. The year predictions are only the first step. Otherwise, the often erratic annual conflicting predictions are amusing enough for a laugh. Go for a "Kingship Astrology"!

The surface of the Sun is heterogenous, which is the scientific astronomical basis of the monthly effects known in astrology!

Chinese astrology is actually very accurate, only there must be at least a shift of one sign for the year.

There are a number of other evidence that the current Chinese Zodiac signs have to be shifted by one sign. It means that current usage of the Chinese Four Pillars systems will be seriously in error. Conventional predictions in a host of Chinese methods like Zi Wei Dou Shu, Ba Zi Eight Characters divination, Qi Men Dun Jia and even Xuan Kong Feng Shui will be wrong.

We have in fact adjusted people horoscopes for a one sign shift in the Chinese Year Zodiacs and found significant more accurate predictions.

  • We sat at a party to celebrate the Christmas of 2011 and the incoming new year of 2012. There was there one well known Chinese Ba Zi master. He heard me explained the errors in Chinese predictions due to lack of shifting the Zodiac signs one year. He took out his ipad and did some Ba Zi calculations. He looked up with astonishment, "Yes, the predictions are more accurate if there is a shift."

The Chinese imperial astrology always referred to actual positions of planets and planetary events and made forecasts accordingly. The Chinese emperors would not use the erratic calendars. This imperial approach is what is seen in Hindu and Western astrology, where forecasts are based on actual positions of planets. The current typical Chinese astrology with their calendrical calculations are only approximations of actual astronomical movements. They have become more inaccurate due to deviations through time - and they require new re-calibrations.

It is time for practitioners to realise that astrology and Feng Shui have scientific astronomical and geography basis. Too long practitioners have been mired in superstitious mind sets.
