The Profound Issues

This series of expositions aim at answering the alike much inter related issues which often plague the minds of people:

Here, we will deal with a heart rending issue very much connected to the "Purpose of Life", vis that of "The Dilemma of Suffering". There will be no true understanding of the "Purpose of Life" if there is no understanding of "The Dilemma of Suffering".

Again, let us not forget to understand the practical application of determining our "Purpose of Life".

The Paradox of Suffering

His Holiness the Dalai Lama once responded to the question of "What is the Purpose of Life?":

• Woman, excited: "Can you tell us what the purpose of life is?" Dalai Lama: "Can you ask me an easier question, please?" He laughed, as did the whole audience. "Actually, it's an easy question. The purpose of life is to be happy." Everyone was stunned, as was I. For about 30 seconds, there was absolute silence. Woman, now timid: "Your Holiness, with all the suffering in the world, how can you say the purpose of life is to be happy?"
  Dalai Lama: Obviously recognizing that it was hard for this woman to challenge him, replied with great compassion: "Remember, I'm a simple Buddhist monk, and one of my vows is to help alleviate suffering in the world.   "I believe that the very purpose of life is to be happy. From the very core of our being, we desire contentment. In my own limited experience I have found that the more we care for the happiness of others, the greater is our own sense of well-being. Cultivating a close, warmhearted feeling for others automatically puts the mind at ease. It helps remove whatever fears or insecurities we may have and gives us the strength to cope with any obstacles we encounter. It is the principal source of success in life. His Holiness the Dalai Lama is one of the very few who connect the "Purpose of Life" to the issue of suffering.

Is the "Purpose of Life" to be happy? Just put this to those who are suffering. Those countless millions killed in wars and natural disasters, which seem to befell both the good and evil. Just put this to those who are suffering horrible diseases.

• Granny was the perfect Soul. She was kind and friendly. She made wonderful meals and tit-bits. She was the type people would say "Only know how to do good but do not know how to do evil". For some time as a kid I noticed she would climb painfully down the stairs to take medicine. Even though small, I would rush to help her, but she would say "I am okay. I m okay."

  Then I woke up one day. How was I to know she had intestinal cancer? As the small boy fearful in her bedroom, I still did not realise she was dying.

  They asked me, Why are there no tears in you?" Destiny had hit below the belt.

  Yes, they say "Heroes do not cry". All the small boy knew was that Granny was lost.

The Nature of Suffering

So, any answer to the question of "What if the Purpose of Life?" would have to tackle the issue of suffering.

A previous article has shown scientific evidence that we have Immortal Photon Matrix Souls. A strong consolation is that if one realises one has an Immortal Photon Matrix Soul, then death with its suffering is only a transient thing. The Immortal Soul had gone to where it came from. Death can have no permanent victory and Life is supreme.

• I will ransom them from the power of Sheol; I will redeem them from death: O death, where are thy plagues? O Sheol, where is thy destruction? repentance shall be hid from mine eyes. Hosea 13:14

  in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.
  For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality.
  But when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall come to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory.
  O death, where is thy victory? O death, where is thy sting?
  The sting of death is sin; and the power of sin is the law: but thanks be to God, who giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. 1 Corinthians 15:52-57

The above passages from the Holy Bible are very profound. One sees the final victory of immortality over death. But one needs beyond that, to see that the passage hints at the profound "Purpose of Life"! At least a major component of the "Purpose of Life" is to develop the ability to counter the "sting of death".

That is, we still have to realise that suffering is real. If we are Immortal Photon Matrixes, we are essentially non biochemical and should transcend the biochemical processes, including those which cause so much sufferings. One should notice that these major sufferings are "lacks" found in this physical biochemical world. These lacks are all physical and biochemical in nature, ill-health, diseases, physical destruction and deaths and poverty, none of which belong to the realm of the Immortal Photon Matrixes.

Suffering is something alien to the nature of the Immortal Photon Matrixes.

Strangely, the Immortal Photon Matrixes can be grieved by the sights of these physical and biochemical lacks of ill-health, diseases, physical destruction and deaths and poverty. That is, the disorders reflected in all these lacks can grieve our Immortal Photon Matrixes. They grieve us to the extent that we inevitably would want to do something to eliminate all these lacks.

Development of Counter to Suffering

A related issue is that if one realises one has an Immortal Photon Matrix Soul, then one would wonder what is one doing in this life which would be better than before?

The world of Immortal Photon Matrixes was Self-Existent. Then, sin and with it suffering entered into this world!

• The ancient Hindu legend is that the immortals were Self-Existent. Then, at one Cosmic Time, they encountered the beautiful but mortal world. To their horrors the beautiful mortal world manifest suffering and death. The nature of the Immortal Photon Matrixes is Goodness. The suffering mortal world is a challenge.

  So, the Immortal Photon Matrixes decide to infuse its Divine Goodness into the mortal world of suffering and death, in order to annihilate the scourge from Existence. That is, the Immortal Photon Matrixes develop Love.

Down the ages, sages searched for the answers to suffering. That had been the real "Purpose of Life" of the ancient sages - to destroy suffering.

Is not the annihilation of suffering the basis and thus purpose of the Lord Buddha's Enlightenment?:

• a. The Four Noble Truths are:
  1. All existence is dukkha.
  2. The cause of dukkha is craving.
  3. The cessation of dukkha comes with the cessation of craving.
  4. There is a path that leads from dukkha, the Noble Eightfold Path.

In the end, the true way to conquer sufferings is "Love":

• All the ancient cultures stated that the "Purpose of Life" is to develop god like qualities to overcome evil. The greatest of these godlike qualities is "Love" and its most powerful companion is "Anticipative Intelligence".
  • The Lord Jesus Christ says that not every one will succeed in achieving this "Purpose of Life". But, He says that those who succeed will look after those who don't.
