If there is one ancient text many scholars would like to understand, it is the King Wen I Ching.

Conventional Interpretations

King Wen I Ching has been known as the "Book of Changes". The title "I Ching" should have clues to indicate what the King Wen I Ching is about.

The ancient Chinese words "I" (or "Ee") and variants for "Change" are illustrated as in Figures 1 to 3.

I4. It represents a lizard, probably the chameleon. A primitive. On the top, the had; at the bottom, the light feet of the reptile. By extension, alert, easy, to change, to transform. - Phonetic series 365. (I. Weiger. 1965. Chinese Characters. Their Origin, Etymology, History, Classification and Significance. Guo-Ming Chen (2008) noted:

"Etymologically, before being applied to I Ching, the Chinese character I had three meanings (Li, 1987; H. Wilhelm, 1960). First, I parallels "lizard" with the top side being likened the round head of the lizard, and the bottom part similar to lizard's legs. In addition, both I and lizard have the same pronunciation. It is said that lizard changes its skin color several times a day. Thus, I receives its semantic meaning of change, which shows the mobility and changeableness nature of a lizard. Second, structurally, I is comprised of "sun" and "moon." The sun represents the nature of yang, and moon the nature of yin. Together, the interaction of sun and moon comes to the emphasis of yin and yang in I Ching. Finally, in Chinese ancient oracle-bone writing the phrases "I ru" (alternating sun) and "bu I ru" (unalternating sun) were found often. The "I" in the phrases means alternation or transformation which is suitable for being used to explain the changeable nature of trigrams and hexagrams in I Ching." Yes, "I" has often been compared with the chameleon, which changes its skin color and pattern to merge with that of the background. Thus, the meaning of "Change" has burnt into the minds of those who seek to understand King Wen I Ching. Now, why see only the change in the chameleon skin?

Why not realise the strategic application, which is that the change is to allow the animal to camouflage itself against the background?
The practical and useful strategic application is something which should form a guiding criterion in meditation about King Wen I Ching.

Now, if we take the meaning of "transform" what strategic applications would come into our mind? This may make the meaning of "Change" more precisely clear, in that it infers a State A changes or transforms into State B. Of course, when State B appears, it would be thought that State A is gone, being completely transformed into State B.

The syntax looks that way. But that is not what "Change" of "I" really means! "Change" can mean so many things. What kind of "Change" is meant in the I Ching?

Reference to Seasonal Fluctuations in Sunlight

The Chinese word "I" is similar to that for "Yang" for bright sunlight (Figures 1,2), which composes of:

Only a horizontal line in "Yang" differentiate it from the word "I", which does not have the horizontal line. Both words have "sun": as the top character. This word "Yang" has the same bottom character of 4 strokes as "I". That is, the bottom four strokes of "I" would also refer to light, and not necessarily the four feet of the lizard.

So, "I" seems to refer to the four rays of light coming from the sun. Why should this means "change" or "transform"? These "Change" have something to do with fluctuations of radiation energies in Nature, one component being the setting and rising of the sun. These fluctuations of radiation energies in Nature have influence on human behaviour - this is what the I Ching is about!

Figure 3, right image, shows another ancient word for "I", which can throw significant insights into what are the "Changes" meant by the I Ching.

This right image seems to show at the top a four squares box, not unlike the Chinese word "Tien" for field. Only in each of the squares there is a dot. Four squares with four dots.

The bottom image seems to be the half or new moon with three strokes at the left. It would seem to be the half or new moon and rains. But when we remember how the "I" and "Yang" have similar images (Figures 1,2) we should realise that the bottom image is not necessarily the new moon and rains but actually a representation of the light rays of the sun. The bottom still represent the rays of the sun of Nature.

Only, instead of the top as the sun, this time it is a four squares image. Those familiar with ancient cultures would realise that this represents the four quarters of heaven and also the four seasons.

Unique Seasons Based Strategies

The I Ching is referring to the influence of seasonal fluctuations of radiation energies on human behaviour! As the four seasons cyclically flow into one another, so would human behaviour, and this is what King Wen I Ching is about!

Careful readings of the Judgments and Duke Chou's Lines show that about 62.5% of the pairs of hexagrams refer to seasonal parameters. The Tai Xuan Jing (53 BC to AD 18) has at least 35% reference to seasonal parameters.
Interpretations of the King Wen I Ching must account for why there are so much references to the seasons.

The King Wen I Ching is about potent strategic applications, based on an understanding of how seasonal parameters regulate human mental behaviour!!

Current commnetaries are mostly in errors
Current commentaries on the Heart Sutra are often confusing and fanciful. Research is ongoing on the several errors whch lead to misinterpretations of the meanings of the Heart Sutra.

The wordings in the Heart Sutra need to be corrected in comparison with the Pali text of Samyukta Agama Sutta. Linguistic studies also reveal that Nagarjuna falsified the text of the Heart Sutra.through changing the original phrase in the text of "an-atma" (Pali "an-atta") to "an" to support his "Emptiness" theory. "Atma" or "atta" means "inherent existence" and also "inherent understanding".

The phrase "an" often translated as "no" should be "an atma" or "an-atta" which means "lack of understanding". Such a coirrection will change the meaning and restore the correct meaning of the middle part of Heart Sutra. Then, the Heart Sutra will become a Theravadin text!

Emptiness with respect to Selfishness has practical significance. But Emptiness with respect to phenomenal existence is only useless semantic sophistry.

This research is providing a new fresh interpretation of the Heart Sutra. The authors' ongoing research into the Diamond Sutra and Lotus Sutra also provide insights into what the Heart Sutra means.

The Kalachakra Mandala.

The ancient metaphysics and cosmological lore of the Kalachakra Mandala feature prominently in the Lotus Sutra.
