Part 2: Transmission of Luopan through Wang Clan

This article is written in memory of the Wang Clan ancestors without whom many ancient Chinese sacred texts would not exist today.
Millennia old secrets finally broken!

Introduction

A previous posting show that many ancient Chinese sacred texts were transmitted through my ancestor Wang Ziqiao, Wang clan founder. How about the Luopan, that Feng Shui compass so important in Chinese geomancy? Those familiar with the history of the Luopan would know that it has origins from the Han and Sui shih boards, which originated from more ancient liubo boards.

Wang Chih, Wang Ancestor, Created the First Luopan

It was Wang Chih, AD 1063, who created the Luopan as it is now:

• "Its origin could be traced to Great Feng Shui Master Wang Chih who practised in north Fukien as early as in the eleventh century." (divinefs.weebly.com. Undated, downloaded April 2021. Compass School of Feng Shui. http://divinefs.weebly.com/compass-school-liqi-pai.html)

The name "Wang Chih" would sound a bell. Would not this indicate that a Wang member was involved in the origins of the Luopan?

Wang Ziqiao and Chizongzi Playing Liubo

What is intriguing is that traditions associate Wang Ziqiao with Red Pine as two immortals playing liubo in front of Hsi Wang Mu (Figure 2). The liubo was the precursor of shih board and TLV mirror.

Wang Ziqiao, the ancestor founder of the Wang Clan, was associated with the liubo, precursor of the Luopan. Other Wangs involved in the development of the Luopan include;

• "The earliest Chinese literature reference to magnetism lies in the 4th century BC writings of Wang Xu (???): "The lodestone attracts iron."" (History of the compass From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia).
  Han Fei Tzu, student of Gui Gu Zi, mentioned the south pointer. Wang Mang, Han dynasty circa AD 4, was obsessed with the TLV mirror. Wang Chung AD 63, Wang Wei AD 415-443, Wang Chih 11th century CE. Guo Po, who visited Tiantai mountains, made reference to the Luopan.
